The government see off late challenges from HIP
opponents
17th May 2007

This has been
a testing week for the government in their struggle to ensure the HIP regime is
implemented on time.
There have been challenges from
both professional bodies such as Royal
Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and from inside the
Commons from the Conservative Party
The RICS challenge comes from
their request for a Judicial Review which calls for a complete review of the HIP
regime which they consider to be inherently flawed and of no use to the
consumer.
The Tories challenge was a
direct assault on similar lines but was presented by way of a House of Commons
motion. The government defeated the motion thanks to their majority presence in
the house. They have confirmed that the
Home Information Pack
regulations will become law on the 1st June 2007 as planned.
There is to be no U turn and no
last minute crisis of confidence.
That should be the final word.
But that said, there are two more weeks before the deadline and you would not
bet against yet another eleventh hour challenge.
We will keep you posted on this
website.
